Canon introduced the imageCLASS MF9280 and MF9220 color multifunction printers (MFPs) in November 2010 for small businesses and workgroups across North America, replacing the imageCLASS MF9150 and MF9170 (September 2008). Print speeds for the MF9280 and MF9220 were rated at 22 pages per minute (ppm) for both black-and-white and color printing, with average monthly duty cycles of 65,000 pages each.

The MF9280 and MF9220 were introduced under the i-SENSYS label in Europe in January and February 2011, respectively; the MF9130 in January 2009, and the MF9170 in March 2008 (all rated at 21 ppm A4-size pages with 65,000 page duty cycles); the imageCLASS MF 9280 and MF9222 in Australia in November 2010. Many other models have also been released using this same print engine.

All printers in the family use the 6,000 page yield CRG-(x)11 cartridge type, with the first digit of the type designation varying to identify the geographic region. In the U.S., for example, they are the CRG-111 cartridges, while in Europe they are the CRG-711.
